Accessibility standards
At Facebook, I have the pleasure of teaching the “Introduction to Content Strategy” course for Content Strategists in their first week of work. One of the things I love to tell them about is our Content Standards, which for me, made my first week at Facebook feel like Content Strategy utopia. Our standards are robust and well-executed, and I had the privilege of being able to author the one on Accessibility.
In addition to giving direction on writing for assistive technologies and being aware of complexity and jargon, I also developed content on writing for cognitive impairment. This includes learning disabilities, brain trauma and other permanent or passing limitations. These standards are used as a reference for over 400 Content Strategists at Facebook, as well as any other interested, cross-functional party.
